SunExpress Flight Delayed or Cancelled? Claim EU261 Compensation Up to €600

SunExpress is a joint venture between Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines, operating leisure flights between Germany and Turkey, Egypt, and other Mediterranean and Middle Eastern destinations. SunExpress Germany GmbH (IATA: XG) is a German EU carrier, fully subject to EU Regulation 261/2004. Delays of 3+ hours, cancellations, and denied boarding entitle you to fixed cash compensation of €250–600 per passenger.

🇩🇪 Germany: 3-year claim window

German law provides a 3-year statute of limitations for EU261 claims. A delayed Frankfurt or Düsseldorf SunExpress departure from 2023 is still claimable in 2026. The same 3-year window applies for SunExpress flights from other German airports: Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart, Berlin.

⚠️ SunExpress Germany (XG) vs SunExpress Turkey (XQ)

There are two SunExpress entities. SunExpress Germany GmbH (XG) is a German EU carrier — EU261 applies on all routes in both directions. SunExpress (XQ) is a Turkish carrier — EU261 applies only if your flight departed from an EU airport. Check your boarding pass: XG = full coverage, XQ = EU departures only.

Am I eligible?

SunExpress Turkey (XQ) flight — only if departure was from an EU or UK airport
Arrival delay of 3+ hours at your final destination
Cancellation with less than 14 days' notice
Denied boarding due to overbooking
SunExpress Turkey (XQ) flight departing from Istanbul, Antalya, or other Turkish airports

SunExpress denial tactics to watch for

  • "Extraordinary circumstances" — crew shortage or technical issues are not extraordinary; SunExpress may claim aircraft defects as extraordinary, which courts consistently reject
  • XG vs XQ confusion — SunExpress may try to attribute delays to the Turkish operating entity; always document which code (XG or XQ) appears on your boarding pass
  • Charter / package holiday disclaimers — charter flight passengers are fully protected under EU261 when operated by an EU carrier like SunExpress Germany
  • Delay measured at departure, not arrival — EU261 measures delay when the aircraft doors open at your final destination
  • Offering travel vouchers instead of cash — you are entitled to cash payment; vouchers can always be refused
