Iberia Flight Delayed or Cancelled? Claim Up to €600 Under EU261

Iberia is Spain's flag carrier, operating flights across Europe, Latin America, and the US. Under EU Regulation 261/2004, delayed or cancelled Iberia flights entitle passengers to fixed cash compensation — regardless of ticket price.

⚠️ Spain: 1-year deadline — act fast

Under Spanish aviation law (Ley de Navegación Aérea), you have only 1 year from the date of your flight to file an EU261 claim in Spain. This is the shortest window in Europe. If Iberia's route operated from Spain, your time to claim is extremely limited.

Am I eligible?

Flight departed from any EU/UK airport (any airline)
Flight arrived at an EU/UK airport on an EU carrier like Iberia
Arrival delay was 3+ hours (not just departure delay)
Cancellation with less than 14 days' notice
Denied boarding due to overbooking
Extraordinary circumstances (genuine severe weather, airport closure, security events)

How much compensation?

Flight distanceExample routesCompensation
Under 1,500 kmMadrid–Barcelona, Madrid–Lisbon€250
1,500–3,500 kmMadrid–London, Madrid–Cairo€400
Over 3,500 kmMadrid–New York, Madrid–Buenos Aires€600

Iberia long-haul: up to €600

Iberia operates long-haul routes to Latin America (Buenos Aires, Bogotá, Mexico City, São Paulo) and the US (New York, Miami, Chicago). If your intercontinental Iberia flight was delayed 4+ hours or cancelled, you may be entitled to €600 per person — regardless of how much your ticket cost.

Common Iberia denial tactics

  • "Extraordinary circumstances" — invoked for crew shortages and technical issues, which are NOT valid grounds
  • Claiming the connecting flight was operated by another carrier (Iberia Express, Vueling) — you can still claim against Iberia as the ticketing carrier
  • Offering Avios points instead of cash — you can refuse and demand cash compensation
  • Citing the 1-year Spanish deadline to pressure you — verify which country's law applies to your route
  • Delays on connections through Madrid–Barajas — Iberia controls many feeder routes

Which statute of limitations applies?

Spain's 1-year window applies to flights departing from Spanish airports. If your Iberia flight departed from the UK, French or German law may give you 6, 5 or 3 years respectively. When choosing where to file, always pick the jurisdiction with the longest window. For flights from Madrid or Barcelona, act within 1 year — no exceptions.
