KLM Flight Delayed or Cancelled? Claim Up to €600 Under EU261

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is subject to EU Regulation 261/2004 for all flights departing EU airports and all KLM-operated flights arriving in the EU. A delay of 3+ hours at arrival — or a cancellation with less than 14 days' notice — may entitle you to fixed compensation of €250 to €600 per person.

Long-haul: up to €600 per person

KLM operates many intercontinental routes (Amsterdam–New York, Amsterdam–Nairobi). For delays of 4+ hours on flights over 3,500 km, compensation rises to €600 — and can be claimed up to 3 years after the flight (Netherlands law: up to 5 years).

    KLM's EU261 form requires your booking reference (PNR), flight number, and a description of the disruption. KLM is generally more responsive than budget carriers — expect a reply within 14 days.

    Escalate to SACM (Netherlands) or national body

    If KLM denies your claim or doesn't respond in 14 days, escalate to the Dutch aviation authority (SACM — Staatssecretaris van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat) or to your own country's authority (e.g. UK CAA, French DGAC).

KLM's most common denial arguments

  • "Extraordinary circumstances" — technical issues are NOT extraordinary; late aircraft arrival from a previous flight is NOT extraordinary
  • Codeshare confusion — if operated by KLM, EU261 applies regardless of booking channel (Air France website, Delta, etc.)
  • Claiming the delay was under 3 hours — verify with actual arrival time, not departure delay
  • Offering miles or vouchers — you can decline and demand cash compensation under EU261
  • Statute of limitations claim — Netherlands courts allow up to 5 years; other EU countries 3 years minimum
